Bloomberg L.P. - Excavation Works, Flat Jacks and Temporary Prop Struts

Hydra-Capsule commissioned to design, supply and preloading of temporary propping struts

The project is one of the largest private investment within the United Kingdom / Europe for an commercial development for Bloomberg London, the construction project for the new European Headquarters for  Bloomberg L.P.

The development comprises two high-grade specification office buildings in the City of London. I  t will include some retail units at ground floor level, and a new entrance to the London Underground, Bank Station.

Hydra-Capsule flat jacks ranging from 50 to 350 tonnes were provided. (Models FJ25, FJ-48 and FJ-60).

Summary

"Hydra-Capsule provided over 5,000 tonnes of  preload jacking forces throughout the project; with props extending over 25 metres in length".

Hydra-Capsule manufactured over 40 number permanent flat jacks to pre-loaded and pre-stress numerous locations of the perimeter steelworks’ prop struts and waling arrangement. To assist with structural strengthening and l limiting displacement and ground settlement and displacement within the critical locations (ie. surrounding offices, buildings and listed church), whilst the full excavation works were completed.

In total the temporary support system was install to a depth of - 24 metres and while all the ground works were completed prior to the concrete core structures being erected.

All works were carried out using high-accurate movement LVDTs (+/- 0.02mm) and load sensors (+/- 1 kN) to meet the critical loading and displacement criteria provided by the structural consultant engineers.

The complete system was connected to Hydra- Capsule ‘purpose built’ read-out structural monitoring equipment / control unit. Which allows all information to be provided in "live" real-time data display.

Hydra-Capsule also provided contract service to fully install and carry out grout injection; to permanently transfuse each flat jack individually for the flat jacking force to be permanently induced for the duration of the project.

Permanent Grout filled Flat Jacks

Tricky flat jacking operation completed successfully by Hydra-Capsule within programme and budget (www.hydra-capsule.com) using or special purpose-built high pressure injection systems.

The works consisted of 21 off. Transfusion flat jacks with a capacity of 40 tons each, 840 ton in total..

Therefore all the jacks were interlinked and synchronously loaded to the specified defined loads, displacements/deflection and limits.

Once competed, each jack (which were jacked/lifted/preloaded with hydraulic fluid) was individually transfused using a double-release valve arrangement, to inject grout and release temporary fluid until the flat jack was fully transferred. Find detailed explanation of the above flat jacking operations at http://www.hydra-capsule.com/flat-jacks .

The key element of the operation, is the jack can be accurately monitoring and maintain the original preload and movement with the structural steelwork being subjected to additional loads and/or further stresses.

Hydraulic Jacking and Structural Support Systems

The St Katharine Docks, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, were one of the commercial docks serving London, on the north side of the river Thames just east (downstream) of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. They were part of the Port of London, in the area now known as the Docklands, and are now a popular housing and leisure complex.

Multi products and services provided and completed by Hydra Capsule at the Quayside Redevelopment Project.

The works involved a mixture of products and services to support the complex remedial works throughout the site.

Hydra Capsule used permanent flat jacks to pre-loaded and pre-stressed numerous areas of steelworks, to assist with structural strengthening and limiting displacement and deflection of critical areas within the structure.

In addition, Hydra Capsule also supplied temporary propping support systems at critical and high-risk areas of the project. Installing supports up to 400 tonnes (Mega-Prop) at particular location(s). With the inclusion of long-stroke (+150mm) hydraulic jacks to synchronously pre-load the supports.

All works were carried out using high-accurate movement LVDTs (+/- 0.02mm) and load sensors (+/- 1 kN) to meet the critical loading and displacement criteria provided by the structural consultant engineers. The complete system was connected to Hydra-Capsule ‘purpose built’ read-out monitoring control unit. Which allows all information to be provided in “live” real-time data display.

Once these works were completed, Hydra Capsule also provided grout injection systems to permanently transfuse flat jacks and carried out concrete strengthening and repairs at badly damaged concrete areas.

Bridge Jacking and Structural Monitoring

Hydra-Capsule have recently completed a major synchronised bridge jacking and grout bags works for the viaduct half joint strengthening. The project involved working with the Highway Agency and Network Rail hand-in-hand due to the unusual bridge structures.

The A14 bridge viaduct was part of the A14 Ellington to Fen Ditton major improvement scheme, but due to the ongoing deterioration of the half joints on the central span of the bridge, without intervention, the bridge would be incapable of of carrying the type and volume of traffic that uses the A14. were becoming deterioration carrying the type and volume of
traffic that uses the A14.

Hydra-Capsule were appointed to design and manufacture 84 number bridge jacking 50 tons capacity screwed ram locking collar hydraulic jacks. All were manufactured in the United Kingdom and to EN BS ISO 9001:2008. In additional, these jacks were interlinked and energised by Hydra Capsule’s synchronised hydraulic jacking system. Which allowed all jacks to be individually controlled by our own computerised system, using precise load and movement displacement (LVDTs) real time monitoring units at each installed strengthening beam position.

Once the defined loads and displacement was achieved, all the hydraulic jacks were mechanically “locked-off” by the screw-ram locking collar.

Once completed, Hydra Capsule installed custom-made grout bags which were inserted at each bearing location and inflated by our grout pump, to wedge the gap. Once the grout bags had cured and reached the specification compressive strength, the hydraulic jacks were energised, locking collars untightened and all jacks loads were de-energised under
controlled pumping. Which transfused the loads into the newly installed elastomeric bearings.

Flat Jacks used for Wind Turbine Levelling Operations

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As part of a major construction repair and remedial project. Hydra Capsule were awarded the contract to design and install a temporary hydraulic jacking system with an inclusion of permanent flat jacks and a structural monitoring throughout the jacking operations. For lifting a total of 7 number turbines and levelling in accordance to the design / build specification.

The turbines ranged from 245 tonnes to 350 tonnes and consisted of a range of different jacks to suit the turbine restraints. Each turbine had a tolerance of 6mm tolerance accuracy. Ranging between 30 and 80 number jacks per turbine.

Due to each turbine being installed and "live" Hydra-Capsule needed to use different jacking system(s) to suit the applicable turbine due to weight, wind and height (up to 160 metres) restraints.
All hydraulic and flat jacks were interlinked as sets to allow a synchronised lifting operation. All jacks be electronically controlled to a central control unit and movement was monitoring using vertical LVDTs sensors and integration of a digital tilt sensor to measure the x and y axis.

In addition, Hydra Capsule were contracted to carry out flat jack(s) grout transfusion operations for permanent installation. The works were completed under "live conditions".
Monitoring movement, pressure / load continuously, With accuracy of 0.25mm, similar to bridge jacking applications.
Once the works were completed, the new permanent concrete plinth was poured to support the turbine for the next 15 to 20 years.
