Bloomberg L.P. - Excavation Works, Flat Jacks and Temporary Prop Struts

Hydra-Capsule commissioned to design, supply and preloading of temporary propping struts

The project is one of the largest private investment within the United Kingdom / Europe for an commercial development for Bloomberg London, the construction project for the new European Headquarters for  Bloomberg L.P.

The development comprises two high-grade specification office buildings in the City of London. I  t will include some retail units at ground floor level, and a new entrance to the London Underground, Bank Station.

Hydra-Capsule flat jacks ranging from 50 to 350 tonnes were provided. (Models FJ25, FJ-48 and FJ-60).

Summary

"Hydra-Capsule provided over 5,000 tonnes of  preload jacking forces throughout the project; with props extending over 25 metres in length".

Hydra-Capsule manufactured over 40 number permanent flat jacks to pre-loaded and pre-stress numerous locations of the perimeter steelworks’ prop struts and waling arrangement. To assist with structural strengthening and l limiting displacement and ground settlement and displacement within the critical locations (ie. surrounding offices, buildings and listed church), whilst the full excavation works were completed.

In total the temporary support system was install to a depth of - 24 metres and while all the ground works were completed prior to the concrete core structures being erected.

All works were carried out using high-accurate movement LVDTs (+/- 0.02mm) and load sensors (+/- 1 kN) to meet the critical loading and displacement criteria provided by the structural consultant engineers.

The complete system was connected to Hydra- Capsule ‘purpose built’ read-out structural monitoring equipment / control unit. Which allows all information to be provided in "live" real-time data display.

Hydra-Capsule also provided contract service to fully install and carry out grout injection; to permanently transfuse each flat jack individually for the flat jacking force to be permanently induced for the duration of the project.

Permanent Grout filled Flat Jacks

Tricky flat jacking operation completed successfully by Hydra-Capsule within programme and budget (www.hydra-capsule.com) using or special purpose-built high pressure injection systems.

The works consisted of 21 off. Transfusion flat jacks with a capacity of 40 tons each, 840 ton in total..

Therefore all the jacks were interlinked and synchronously loaded to the specified defined loads, displacements/deflection and limits.

Once competed, each jack (which were jacked/lifted/preloaded with hydraulic fluid) was individually transfused using a double-release valve arrangement, to inject grout and release temporary fluid until the flat jack was fully transferred. Find detailed explanation of the above flat jacking operations at http://www.hydra-capsule.com/flat-jacks .

The key element of the operation, is the jack can be accurately monitoring and maintain the original preload and movement with the structural steelwork being subjected to additional loads and/or further stresses.

Hydraulic Jacking and Structural Support Systems

The St Katharine Docks, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, were one of the commercial docks serving London, on the north side of the river Thames just east (downstream) of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. They were part of the Port of London, in the area now known as the Docklands, and are now a popular housing and leisure complex.

Multi products and services provided and completed by Hydra Capsule at the Quayside Redevelopment Project.

The works involved a mixture of products and services to support the complex remedial works throughout the site.

Hydra Capsule used permanent flat jacks to pre-loaded and pre-stressed numerous areas of steelworks, to assist with structural strengthening and limiting displacement and deflection of critical areas within the structure.

In addition, Hydra Capsule also supplied temporary propping support systems at critical and high-risk areas of the project. Installing supports up to 400 tonnes (Mega-Prop) at particular location(s). With the inclusion of long-stroke (+150mm) hydraulic jacks to synchronously pre-load the supports.

All works were carried out using high-accurate movement LVDTs (+/- 0.02mm) and load sensors (+/- 1 kN) to meet the critical loading and displacement criteria provided by the structural consultant engineers. The complete system was connected to Hydra-Capsule ‘purpose built’ read-out monitoring control unit. Which allows all information to be provided in “live” real-time data display.

Once these works were completed, Hydra Capsule also provided grout injection systems to permanently transfuse flat jacks and carried out concrete strengthening and repairs at badly damaged concrete areas.

Bridge Jacking and Structural Monitoring

Hydra-Capsule have recently completed a major synchronised bridge jacking and grout bags works for the viaduct half joint strengthening. The project involved working with the Highway Agency and Network Rail hand-in-hand due to the unusual bridge structures.

The A14 bridge viaduct was part of the A14 Ellington to Fen Ditton major improvement scheme, but due to the ongoing deterioration of the half joints on the central span of the bridge, without intervention, the bridge would be incapable of of carrying the type and volume of traffic that uses the A14. were becoming deterioration carrying the type and volume of
traffic that uses the A14.

Hydra-Capsule were appointed to design and manufacture 84 number bridge jacking 50 tons capacity screwed ram locking collar hydraulic jacks. All were manufactured in the United Kingdom and to EN BS ISO 9001:2008. In additional, these jacks were interlinked and energised by Hydra Capsule’s synchronised hydraulic jacking system. Which allowed all jacks to be individually controlled by our own computerised system, using precise load and movement displacement (LVDTs) real time monitoring units at each installed strengthening beam position.

Once the defined loads and displacement was achieved, all the hydraulic jacks were mechanically “locked-off” by the screw-ram locking collar.

Once completed, Hydra Capsule installed custom-made grout bags which were inserted at each bearing location and inflated by our grout pump, to wedge the gap. Once the grout bags had cured and reached the specification compressive strength, the hydraulic jacks were energised, locking collars untightened and all jacks loads were de-energised under
controlled pumping. Which transfused the loads into the newly installed elastomeric bearings.

Flat Jacks used for Wind Turbine Levelling Operations

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As part of a major construction repair and remedial project. Hydra Capsule were awarded the contract to design and install a temporary hydraulic jacking system with an inclusion of permanent flat jacks and a structural monitoring throughout the jacking operations. For lifting a total of 7 number turbines and levelling in accordance to the design / build specification.

The turbines ranged from 245 tonnes to 350 tonnes and consisted of a range of different jacks to suit the turbine restraints. Each turbine had a tolerance of 6mm tolerance accuracy. Ranging between 30 and 80 number jacks per turbine.

Due to each turbine being installed and "live" Hydra-Capsule needed to use different jacking system(s) to suit the applicable turbine due to weight, wind and height (up to 160 metres) restraints.
All hydraulic and flat jacks were interlinked as sets to allow a synchronised lifting operation. All jacks be electronically controlled to a central control unit and movement was monitoring using vertical LVDTs sensors and integration of a digital tilt sensor to measure the x and y axis.

In addition, Hydra Capsule were contracted to carry out flat jack(s) grout transfusion operations for permanent installation. The works were completed under "live conditions".
Monitoring movement, pressure / load continuously, With accuracy of 0.25mm, similar to bridge jacking applications.
Once the works were completed, the new permanent concrete plinth was poured to support the turbine for the next 15 to 20 years.

Hydra-Capsule have become a world leader within design, manufacturing and supplying of flat jacks. By manufacturing our flat jacks within our “in-house” purpose-built workshop. We are able to test all our jacks to British standard legislations, all within our United Kingdom premises.

In addition, Hydra-Capsule, as standard, will incorporate digital monitoring to our flat jacking systems to record movement, displacement and pressure / load data to offer the most professional service throughout the United Kingdom.

Hydra Capsule is a leading subcontractor for manufacturing, supplying and installation of flat jacks. Hydra Capsule originally founded the company, on flat jacks alone, however over 30 years of experience within this market, have grown and development all heavy lifting equipment to suit all lifting applications, making us one of the market leaders for flat jacking.

Description of Flat Jack

The flat jack itself consist of 2 main components; steel moulded capsule and a pair of thrust plates. The standard shape of a flat jack is round, however square and oval shape are available in special circumstances. The jack has an inlet and outlet connections to inject fluid and bled the capsule fully.

“The flat jack is the lowest height jack in the world that can exert forces up to 850 tonnes”

Depending of the application, an range of fluid can be injected into the jack(s) under pressure; water, oil, cementitious grout and resin. With an working pressure of a maximum 150 bars, with a stroke range from 25mm to 35mm dependant of the manufactured jack.

If existing structures have to be held up by means of piles or beams, it is sometimes necessary to preload the supporting section. This preloading can be effected with a flat jack, which is generally left behind in the structure.

Application of Flat Jacks:
  • lifting of structures
  • jacking of structures – pre-loading and inducing a permanent force to foundations, piles, beams, columns, bearings, seismic isolators and steelworks
  • holding of structure – temporary propping / works, new foundations and  etc
  • Weighing and Measure of forces
  • Balance force loadings
Hydra-Capsule can offer a complete contractual installation service throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe. With our vast knowledge and experience within the sector of jacking works we can meet all clients requirements at a professional level based on our 30 years of trading.

Please find attached technical information on flat jacks at our website: http://www.hydra-capsule.com within our contract services.

Hydra Capsule to offer a complete “one-stop” solution for all suitable applications, allowing for complete control and analytics of structures throughout projects.

Hydra Capsule is a leading subcontractor for supplying flat jacks, hydraulic jacks for hire, temporary propping systems, electronic instrumentation, and real-time / long-distance monitoring. With over 30 years of experience within this market, Hydra Capsule has extensively designed and developed systems to suit all applications.

Currently Hydra Capsule monitoring division can offer:
  • Consultancy and Conceptual designs
  • Installation of instrumentation, monitoring equipment, temporary propping works, and hydraulic jacking systems
  • Real-time and long-distance monitoring, with the inclusion of provisional data analysis facilities
  • Complete data-logging and alarm / trigger limits integration; via SMS or email warnings, for complete monitoring control
  • Automated (solenoid control) and / or responsive solutions (manual control)
  • Integration of all electronic instrumentations (ie. Geodetic Monitoring Systems, pressure transducers, movements displacement / LVDTs, stroke sensors, tilt sensors, strain-gauges and load cells) to one control software unit to analysis
Hydra Capsule have carried out numerous projects, previously Kingston Bridge – Glasgow and Guild Hall – London (which is still installed to-date), to current projects utilizing our system:

Birmingham New Street Station Redevelopment – Hydra Capsule have installed a jacking system with ULS to over 9,000 tonnes with load monitoring through pressure transducers, load cells and strain gauges. To relative displacement monitoring of structural movements, attached to the critical elements, to measure up to accuracy of +/- 0.01mm through Geotechnic monitoring devices.

The complete system being data-logged and accessed through our wireless viewing page. The project is approx 18 to 24 months duration, prior to permanent installation works to be carried out.

Tate Modern, London Art Galley – Hydra Capsule were approached to design and install a hydraulic jacking system capable of 4,000 tonnes. The complete system, was designed and manufactured by Hydra Capsule to meet the Engineers specifications.

The hydraulic jacking system was required to be electronically controlled; single, multi-sets and/or all hydraulic jacks activated synchronously, achieved through the use of electronic non-return solenoid-control.

The monitoring element involved “real-time” monitoring during jacking phases and throughout the 12 months construction period. Monitoring the relative movement of the support beam to the structure. This was achieved by installed stroke sensors, deflection boxes, and Hydra Capsule’s relative laser levelling system. With the integration of pressure transducers to distribute loads through the correct load-path throughout the construction phases.

As stated above for each project, all the monitoring information is transferred from our on-site data-loggers to a wireless viewer website page and can be displayed and access 24/7 worldwide. In addition, Hydra Capsule software can introduce numerous specified tolerance limits, which then are exceed, will activate automated trigger alarm and distribute to all key personnel through an email or SMS text alarm indicating the location and description.

This will allow key personnel to review and analysis the information and trend data provided. To carry out the necessary works to the structure. Through change of the construction phase working or introducing of jacking adjustment, giving construction our full support.
